Perhaps one of the most interesting and colorful words in the
English language today is the word "fuck". It is the one magical word
which, just by its sound, can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate.

In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories.

It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John).

It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck),

a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck),

an adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John),

or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck).

It can also be used as an adjective (Mary is fucking beautiful)

or an interjection (Fuck! I'm late for my date with Mary).

It can even be used as a conjunction (Mary is easy, fuck she's also stupid).

As you can see, there are very few words with the overall versatility of the word "fuck".

Aside from its sexual connotations, this incredible word can be used to describe many situations...

Greetings "How the fuck are ya?"

Fraud "I got fucked by the car dealer."

Resignation "Oh, fuck it!"

Directions "Fuck off."

There are several ways one can form dreads. One can go the
natural way and that is the way I'm doing it. Well, maybe
technically one would not do a single thing to their head and just let
the dreads do their own thing, but I'm not using anything on my head
other than some string and rubber bands. So that is pretty
natural, in my opinion.

Another way is one can use a dread wax on their hair. It holds it
together real tight so you have a less messier look. I think
somehow it helps the dreads form too, but I don't quite remember.

One can also back comb their hair into dreads and then use something
like wax to keep it real tight. This is like instant dreads, good
if you really don't want the messy look. You section your hair
off and then using a fine comb, tease your hair (backcomb) starting at
the roots and working to the ends. Then you tie off the top and
the bottom.

There may be other ways, I don't really know, but these are the ones I remember.

Some important tips for any method, your hair must be clean.
Definitely you do not need to wash everyday, but while the dreads are
forming you need to wash 1-2 times a week. The oils on your head
will keep the hair slick and unable to form dreads. And (it seems
pretty obvious...) you wouldn't use conditioner on your head because
you want your hair to tangle up. I have been using some coconut
oil on my scalp because it was really itching for awhile and I broke
out on my neck, but all that is all cleared up now after the oil use.

So then I just let my hair go for a couple of days to see where dreads
were naturally forming at, then I sectioned my hair off. I tied
string at the top and then wrapped it around my hair. As my hair
starts locking up, I remove string and rubber bands and put new ones in
where it seems appropriate.

I usually have a bandana on cause my hair is pretty messy looking, but
that is part of the whole adventure of it I guess. I sometimes
have it in a pony like in the picture below when I'm out. I
really don't care how it looks, I think it looks groovy and my vote is
what counts LOL!

So, now to the question Why? Why does one do this? For me,
it is freeing. I am free from the shiny, smooth, full, bouncy
hair. I don't need that hair. I tried to do that hair
before and I just wasted tons of money on products. For the past
couple of years my hair has just been washed and combed. Very low
maintainence. Right before I started this dread venture, my hair
was 19 inches long. It was a huge annoyance, trying to comb it,
trying to keep it out of food. I lost long pieces of hair
daily. I didn't want a hair cut, then I would be subject to that
whole goregeous haircut thing...you know, bring a picture in of a hot
chic (yes I brought in Winona Ryder's pic before LOL) and expect to
look just as hot when you walk out. Then the next day you have no
idea what to do with this haircut you just spent all your money on.

So I decide to do dreads. It really frees me from the culture
presure to look perfect. It also frees me from age and mom
stereotypes. I don't look like a mom, at least not like your
normal kind of mom. The mom you see out shopping
everywhere. I don't look 27, I get carded for alcohol all the
time. I also don't look like a business owner. I just love
breaking those stereotypes.

It has has some spiritual feelings for me. I feel like I'm
getting deeper into myself by doing this. I wrote not too long
ago about spiritual enlightenment and for some reason letting my hair
go like this seems like some sort of enlightenment. It is still
pretty fresh, I have not gone through the whole dread expirience.
Supposedly, in 6-9 months I won't need any bands or ties in my
hair. My hair will all be dreaded and taking a good shape.
It'll be interesting to see what that is like.
