| survivor: queensafter four years of denial, i've (temporarily) moved to queens for the time being. needless to say, now that the streets are not formed in a grid, nor do they go in any kind of sequential number order that makes any kind of sense, i'm pretty much a goner in the streets of queens. i studied my address like a four-year-old last night, reciting the building number and street name to myself (my manager quizzed me this morning). i haven't quite gotten the zip code yet, mainly because i choose not to remember. but i should, in case i ever need to go to the police. then again, i don't know where the police station is. if you see me wandering hopelessly around your neighborhood (i could be sobbing mercilessly at the same time..but don't worry, that's my just my natural reaction to being lost), could you point me back in the right direction? Most likely i got on the wrong bus/train and had no idea where to get off. or, better yet, could you just drive me to my front door? my tears might dry if you open the window and let the air blow on my face. on a more exciting note though, i made it into manhattan all by myself on public transportation this morning. i followed the guy who was dressed like he worked in the city to find the bus stop, and then i followed him so i could find the subway entrance. the commute from queens is definitely more ethnic. my old commute consisted of dogs and their owners, 4-year old kids and strollers with their nannies (the book is so true), the business-type heading for midtown, some doctors, and a few old people here and there. it's not so bad. now i just need to figure out how to make it back into queens at the end of the day. it's going to be an interesting few weeks. | | |
