| Nobody Beats Berkeley...?A tribute entry to my poorly represented alma mater:
The 2008 US News ranking for civil engineering undergraduate programs:
1. University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign 2. University of California - Berkeley 3. Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
Okay... For a more direct comparison, here's a list of some accomplishments:
UIUC: created NFL, Playboy magazine, PayPal, Oracle, Sieble Systems, YouTube, Firefox, Delta Airlines, BET, engineered the Golden Gate Bridge and plasma TV screen.
Berkeley: created... uh... an element in the periodic table known as "Berkelium". (what?)
And it doesn't help that I'm surrounded by Berkeley graduates and students. |

| no update!nobody's updating xanga anymore. and i can't update two blogs at once...
after a year and a half of living in the most liberal city in America, i must say it's a pretty weird place. i remember when i first landed in SFO for my first visit, i was shocked to see that all the airport janitors i saw were Asians. then i found out that more than some 5,000 people who work in the Bay Area district of Caltrans are Chinese people. being an Asian here is so easy. a lot of elderly Chinese engineers at work have already asked me about my last name and my family roots before realizing that i'm not really Chinese.
one time, i accidentally walked into a conference room, but everyone in the room was Chinese - and the meeting was being held in Chinese.
that's how we run the freeway system in California~ |

| My BART Pet Peeves(So BART is San Francisco's subway system. Name is kinda funny.)
1. People who sit on the isle seat, when the window seat is empty - esp in crowded trains.
2. There's always an empty seat that has some questionable brown stains, right where you gotta land your butts.
3. That person in front of me who just can't figure out how to insert the ticket right.
4. Loud music leaking out from cheap headphones. And that person singing/rapping along.
5.
Escalator rule #1: Left lane is the fast lane. Okay, it seems that not
too many people are familiar with this rule, and that's fine with me.
But some folks just love to stop all of a sudden as they were walking
up. I usually don't notice and keep walking - and couple times I almost
drove my head into the butts of the person standing above me.
6. Legs stretched out across the whole bench.
7. People who jump into the train before I get a chance to get out, at my stop.
8.
The old carpet smell - it's BART's signature smell, and I hate it.
(Although recently they've been ripping out the carpets when
rehabilitating trains.)
-----------
I think I have a
couple more... Maybe I have so many pet peeves because we're all just
sleepy (and grumpy) zombies. but I also do have many positive
experiences with BART:
-There's a train operator (a female) when I catch the train at ~7AM from Plaza station, who always says "Good morning, good morning and welcome to the Fremont train."
Not that her voice is attractive, but probably nobody else will greet
you like that during your commute. And she says good morning twice, at every stop.
-I
usually have pet peeves when a person sits next to me when there are
empty seats everywhere. But that one time! Man, she was so pretty...
and she got off at Berkeley station. Too bad I never saw her again.
-And
I like the BART's promotional posters. They say things like "Thank you
for not feeding the meters today" with a picture of two thumbs up. And
BART is spelled out as "Bay Area Rides Together" - isn't that cool?
Okay, maybe not too many positive experiences. But I'm just thankful that no BART train has ever broken down on me.
What are YOUR pet peeves? |
