The Shack

Someone asked me to read this book and share my thoughts.  I likely wouldn't otherwise have bothered reading it.  I am not going to make this a long post.  Briefly, this is an awful, awful book filled with numerous untruths about God and a perversion of the gospel.  Let me give some examples.   This is one of these books where a screwed up person gets a face-to-face meeting with God.  In this case, two persons of the Trinity are women.  "Papa" is a large, African-American woman.  The Spirit is Sarayu, an Asian woman.  Jesus is a Middle-Eastern man with a large nose.  Then besides the three persons, there is also Sophia -- an off-shoot of Sarayu (?).  Second, this book promotes a form of the ancient heresy of patripassionism.  "Papa" is portrayed as having the same wounds as Jesus.  Third, the God of "the Shack" sends absolutely no one to hell.  Finally, this is probably the most explicitly Arminian novel I've ever read.  "Papa" says at one point, "In Jesus, I have forgiven all humans for their sin against me, but only some choose relationship." (p.225).  There is much more like that in this book.  William Young meet Jacob Arminius.

Eugene Peterson has endorsed this book saying, "This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress did for his.  It's that good!"  No, Mr. Peterson, this book is poison.   It would be best for people just to go back to Bunyan.  Bunyan was a Baptist, but he shared our commitment to the doctrines of grace and to an orthodox doctrine of the Trinity.

I try and make it my goal to be positive and redemptive here on Yinkahdinay, but I saw today that this book was being promoted by BC Christian News and I know that it's making the rounds in our circles.  These are not great days for discernment.  Loved ones, because the gospel is at stake I feel obligated to warn you:  please don't waste your time and money on books like this.

Tim Challies has a good review (although I read it quite some time ago) of this book on his Book Review site: Discerning Reader.  Here's the link if you or anyone else is interested: Review of The Shack.  I'm always amazed at how much theological revising people think they can get away with just to make the gospel more palatable, in some way, to others.  I wonder what else is due for a change?

Thanks for the review.

I am in the process of reading the Shack right now and am appalled! I can't believe that anyone with half a brain could think this is a "good book". I will finish it only to complete my arsenal of ammunition. Thanks for the link, that'll also be helpful.
