Sarah's war on American sexual prudery continues

I think anyone who has talked to me for oooh... about five minutes can tell you that I think our socially mandated norms regaurding sex, sexuality, and the human body are a festering lump of crap.  So it heartens me to see this article up at CNN.com, with the glaring headline

"Reality check: 95 percent of Americans had premarital sex".

No shit, really?  <sarcasm>I never would have guessed based on a cursory survey of my friends and family.</sarcasm>  However, the best part of the article (for me) is this sentance:
"The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past."
American policy and perception of sexual activity is based on nothing more then balderdash and chicanery.  We build our houses on sand, on these myths that long ago Mom and Dad (or Grandma and Grandpa) didn't get it on, they merely looked into each others eyes and found some kind of magic luv connection and didn't need sex.... and hence our generation is the fuckup for wanting it.  Well thats crap.  Sure, every now and then blind aquirrels find acorns and someone makes it to marriage with virginity firmly in tact, but since that is such a statistically small percentage of actual people, why do we punish ourselves and those around us so hard for being one of the 95%?  When I see a number like 95% of Americans, I figure that 94% of those people are feeling guilty for not waiting, feeling like failures, feeling like they have to justify their actions with qualifiers like "we were in love/engaged/on vacation/in a life or death situation", etc. Congratulations, we must be the first society in the world to give 95% of our population issues that lead to needing industrial strength therapy.  No wonder the therapy busienss is booming.

The truth is that human beings enjoy sexual activity and have it on a quite regular basis.  Even when pressured with strong social taboos, we break them because sex is fun.  It forges a fundamental and important connection with others, no matter if the relationship lasts for decades or just one night.  It provides the expression and experiance of physical, emotional, and psychological needs that we all have.  Regaurdless of when or why or how a person chooses to have sex, I would like to see people loose the shame and guilt factor... and for the love of pete, stop policing others behavior.  As 95% of the country will attest, they've done it too.
