Organizational Description:
The Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) is a national advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policy, program and research efforts to improve the health and well being of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Founded in 1986, APIAHF approaches activities with the philosophy of coalition-building and developing capacity within Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We advocate on health issues of priority and significance to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, conduct technical assistance and training, provide health and U.S. Census data analyses and information dissemination, and convene regional and national conferences on Asian American and Pacific Islander health.
The Asian & Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Institute, as part of the APIAHF, is a national coalition of domestic violence experts, shelter workers, health educators, and policy activists working to eliminate domestic violence in Asian communities by building supportive networks, increasing awareness and prevention of domestic violence, identifying and expanding resources, and informing and promoting research and policy.
Title: Community Organizing Program Coordinator III, Full Time Reports to: DV Program Director
Job Summary: The Coordinator of Community Organizing, under the supervision of the DV Program Director, will be chiefly responsible for Outreach, Technical Assistance and Capacity-building to API Community Based Organizations that provide services to Asian and Pacific Islander battered women.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Build Capacity of API Community Based Organizations to prevent domestic violence through community organizing. • Provide training and Technical Assistance to API domestic violence organizations • Develop training curricula and materials that build capacity of CBOs to engage in community organizing • Convene advocates’ forums, workshops and conferences to enhance national networking. • Work collaboratively with API Community Based Organizations, advocates, state and national organizations. • Develop a plan to support regional organizing projects • Convene and lead Community Organizing working group and provide staff support to APIDVI’s other working groups • Responsible for working with team members on other projects as related to Institute’s Resource Center and the Health Forum • Engage in policy advocacy, and participate in APIDVI’s research activities to include data gathering, documentation, needs assessments and evaluations. • Collect, analyze, and write reports on relevant literature, prepare information packets and materials for dissemination through APIDVI’s Resource Center • Travel to domestic violence organizations and conferences as needed throughout the U.S. for on-site trainings and conference workshops/presentations • Represent the API Institute at local, state and national levels by serving on advisory committees, collaborating on joint projects that reflect critical issues affecting API communities. • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
Qualifications:
• Graduate degree or equivalent experience in domestic violence, public health or related field • Five years of domestic violence service/advocacy experience working with Asian and/or Pacific Islander communities • Three or more years of demonstrated training experience • Five years of experience in community organizing with a strong preference for designing campaigns/projects • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people • Experience in program planning and development • Demonstrated effective writing skills • Demonstrated effective public speaking and meeting facilitation skills • Demonstrated proficiency with Windows-based word processing and email • Strong initiative, creativity and motivation, including ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines • Ability to travel as part of work responsibilities
Desired Qualifications:
• Experience or interest in domestic violence and health policy; • Previous experience organizing nationally • Bilingual and/or biliterate in an Asian or Pacific Islander language.
