Cars screech through the ten o’clock humidity, carving the darkness, marking the tar. The two little girls are now more grown up, sitting on the lump of cement against the gutter, carrying all their thoughts and words away; they’re still too young to be heard.
Once more the diamond chips stare down at them, these two united pulses, each with passion to feed the other.
The fragments are startled at the intensity of the little ones’ stares. Intense, chocolate brown, and flecks of green.
No one’s stared at us like that in years.
Do you think there’s a Heaven? White asks of black.
I don’t know…it must not function very well, though. Black answers.
What do you mean?
Well, who would take care of all those billions of souls? I mean, someone’s gotta give them jobs, and enforce the rules…it’s gotta be hard work running Heaven.
Maybe that’s why Heaven’s Heaven. People learn to be good there – they follow the rules without someone telling them to.
Maybe. Or maybe there’s no rules at all.
And finally, the White and the Black, the blonde and the brown, the pale and the tan, finally realize that the world…
is more grey than they thought.
