Well, it turns out I was a little early in my sporting news update of the last post. Billy Donovan had a change of heart, or something and returned to the Florida Gators. Many thoughts have been expressed as to why Billy flip flopped more than John Kerry over the weekend and decided to return to Gainsville to coach the back to back national champion Florida Gators. Allow me to chip in with my .02 cents.
Donovan was offered 6 million a year for five years to coach the NBA's Orlando Magic. He signed, and the was allowed out of this contract in order to take a 3 million dollar a year for 5 years contract extention to return to Florida... oh, and he cannot take a coaching job in the NBA for at least the next 5 years (if anyone will ever hire him again after this event remains to be seen.) Why would anyone choose to leave 3 million a year on the table and return to a place where (1) he has attained the height of success and has no more challenges, nothing more to prove. and (2) Greater expectations will be placed on him to win consistently now that he has gone back to back. The alternative, Donovan could have (1) inherited a mediocre new team (2) landed the Magic a new arena (3) taken on the challege of the NBA (4) become a very, very wealthy man without having to relocate his family.
Donovan has said he "realized how much I love the University of Florida" over the past weekend. I would like to propose a different thought. I think Donovan looked at his mentor Rick Pitino, who had attained heights of success at the University of Kentucky, then failed as head coach of the Boston Celtics before returning to coach college at Louisville. I think he saw in Pitino what could become of him. Had Pitino stayed at UK he would have continued to be loved by the UK faithful, and could have had naming rights to a basketball court one day. As it is, Pitino is known as an NBA failure and a good college coach. He could have been a coaching god.
Another prominent coach I believe Donovan looked at was Coach K from Duke. He has had great success at Duke, the last team before Florida this year to win back to back NCAA titles, and has never tested the NBA waters. Coach K (Im not even going to attempt to spell his last name) is known as a legend. His name is on the court at Duke. He has a lifetime contract. All American players trip over themselves to play for him at Duke. And... this is what I think pushed Donovan back to the NCAA.... Coach K makes the great majority of his money from endorsements. He is at a point in his career where he coaches because he likes to coach, not because he has to earn a living or support his family. Coach K has reached MJ status. Billy Donovan would like to reach that status one day.
So Donovan went back to Florida leaving the sports fans, talk show hosts, bloggers, and columnists with plenty to fill their time with. Why did he go back? I propose that Donovan thinks that if he continues to have success at UF one day he will have his name on the court, one day he will be a god in the eyes of Gator basketball fans (Where were you before 2005, by the way?) and one day he will make millions not just coaching basketball, but from endorsing Visa, or Coke, or Nike, or some rich corporation that will love him.
Im not condemning his choice, nor condoning it, just throwing out some more hot air on the topic. If you know my stance on materialism, you will know there is an element of all this that sickens me and reflects poorly on our contemporary culture, but Ive covered that enough, I think Ill spare the time on this post. Its Saturday, time to have some fun.
