I am bored here at work. Its Friday, no one is doing anything, but we'r all pretending to work because our boss is here pretending to work too.

My wedding planning has been extremely smooth. From Engagement (Dec 22nd) to today, I was blessed with a few major life events:
1) Move out of my old house
2) Move into a temp. house
3) Found a new house
4) Applied for mortgage
5) Moved into the new house (25mins from work, 15mins from church)
6) Secured my job
7) Gained a few pounds (i still have my man-boobs)

With the wedding itself, plenty was miraculously knocked down as well:
1) Finished premarital class
2) Found reception site
3) Found DJ, photographer, videographer, Limo service
4) Wedding gown (guys, this is not a process you want to be a part of)
5) Decoration decision (guys, when asked for opinions, just say "it looks beautiful..." stay as quiet as possible)
6) Wedding ring
7) Program plan

I have about 1 more month till my Wedding, people usually have PMS (Premarital syndrome), shouldn't I be worried?

Done! Just handed my thesis today!!!

Its an 86 page beast on "Electronic Handbook of Fracture: A Java-based boundary element program for fracture analysiso f multiple curvilinear cracks in the general anisotropic solids."

Also published on the journal: Advances in Engineering Software.

Now I gotta prepare a 45min presentation on this baby. Can't wait to say goodbye to Rutgers after 7 years of nerdhood.

Myth Busted

Some of you might be wondering what I have been doing the past semester besides the usual equation humping and bathroom trips. The truth of the matter is that I've signed a contract with Department of Defense that requires if not all of attention and brain power. This job is so intense that over time I've grew extremely emotional attached, and come to think of it, this is the next best thing that happened to my life after knowing Christ. The pay is harsh, actually negative, because of the out-of-pocket expense when it comes to purchasing state-of-the-art researching equipment. And health benefit is close to nothing comparing to the job hazard I face: constant exposure to highly radioactive elements and experimental malnutritious food, all on top of NJ Turnpike commute between my house and my research facility.

Nevertheless, a contract such as this is something every boy dreamed about during childhood, to know that one has pressed on to reach his childhood dream is nothing less than the work of God. I remember back in the middle-school days when God all of a sudden flipped my geek-switch on, that’s when I decided I would strive for perfection at all cost, even if it cost me my precious time, i shall persist. During high school I saw a lot of potentials, but my shyness saved me from potential disasters. My undergraduate years have proven the same fate, that I am either too shy to approach a job potential or too occupied with school work and games to get my butt out of my room to initiate. Finally at the last year of my graduate school, a door of opportunity opened. I remember saying to myself: "hey! This offer has always been there, how come I didn't realize? I guess I was just too dumb to realize." Now I think I am mature enough to face the responsibilities and joy of signing this contract, I ought to grasp this opportunity before I let another dog-year slip by.

Thus explains my mysterious lack-of-surface over the past couple month, I know I know, I feel like Jack Bauer, I can't tell you guys too much else I'll put myself and the job in danger. Now some of you might ask why I named this entry "Myth Busted." Well, for the longest time, I thought I’d never get a job, that I’ll die a poor jobless soul. My friends and I even formed the Jobless-Club, where poor lonely jobless guys come to comfort one another with the idea of how great it is to be jobless; yet deep inside all of us lone for a relationship with the job of our dreams. Well, I managed to have my own myth busted, I am proud to announce that I am no longer jobless, and will be occupied with Department of Defense, please pardon my new invisible life.

Material Properties of Boys and Girls.

Don’t ask me why or how I thought this up, if you know me long enough, this entry shouldn’t be surprising.

We structural engineers have a way of describing material behaviors under load. To simplify everything, I’ll only introduce two major types of materials: elastic and brittle. An elastic material will show much deformation before breaking, where as a brittle one won’t show as much deformation under the same load, so gives people little warning before failure.

Now after some careful observation and personal experience, I generalized most of the female population exhibit elastic behavior, whereas the male proves to be more brittle. Now you can argue with me special cases, but this and but that…that’s why I used the word “generalize.” Or you can say “you’ve never been with a girl, who are you to generalize?” Again, I observe, form theories that can be applied to general cases, that’s what we long term professional students do, all theory, little to no application!

Guys are brittle materials. Hard exterior soft interior, we think we are big and buff fueled with male ego. We think we can take on almost anything, anyone, any situation. For most of the time, I agree. We can endure most storms without showing much signs of fatigue or deformation. We tough things out, we accept no failure, we seek no support, no-blood-no-gain mentality. We are rigid, governed mostly by logic instead of emotion, almost immune to external influence. The world may do what it feels good, but we men, must do what is right! All is good until we hit a critical load we can no longer carry. Our brittle nature display little sign of warning before this catastrophic failure. We crash and burn, the midlife crisis, we shut off our state of mind, isolate ourselves from the world hoping the shame and disgrace would disappear magically. We become completely useless, like a shattered piece of glass, useless.

Girls on the other hand are elastic materials. Soft exterior as well as interior. From most guy’s point of view. Note: from most guy’s point of view. Girls are incapable of doing anything right without a guy’s help. From operating machinery, to driving down Parkway, or even changing a light bulb, they need guy’s help. But you know what, from what I observed, when confronting challenges, girls are more tolerant to change (some are too tolerant though.) Although driven mostly by emotion and some seems to have absolutely no logic, they do have characters guys should learn from. They are like rubber balls, you hit them, they bounce around only to return to original shape (no, you do NOT literally hit girls – its wrong!); you put them in an odd shape container, they deform to fit that shape. My mother is an awesome example of a woman’s determination, willingness to accept and face changes. Girls go out of their way to look for help when they need it, asking for directions when lost driving is only a small display of such character. The fact of accepting one needs help is a noble quality; it brings about humility, meekness and ultimately perseverance.

Now where am I going with this? Where else but Genesis 2:18 – God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” There, I said it. I picture the man & woman relationship like a human body. If you remove the bones from our body, you’ll just be a blob of meat (recall family guy where Peter wished all his bones would disappear so some guy couldn’t break him.) And if you have a skeleton without its protective layer of meat, one hit with a baseball bat will be enough to break you completely. Thus we have the soft tissues encapsulating our skeletal structure. The skeletal structure defines the basic form of the human body, making it resistant to high deformation under low stress. The soft tissues provide buffer and elastic resistance to the skeletal structure, so an impulsive force would not shatter the brittle nature of our bone; instead the force would be gracefully absorbed by the soft tissue, and the deformed skin would elastically return to its original figure. So my conclusion, men need women as much as women need men. There is no superman or superwoman, just a bunch of elastic materials covering a bunch of tough ceramic core.

Summer 2006

As I ready myself for yet another school year (possibly my last ever), memories of this summer comes flooding my brain. So before I dump them into the recycle bin, I thought recording them in some electronic medium would be a good idea, and what is better than the good-old-out-dated xanga?

Ironically, this summer started and ended with weddings. Ken and Jane’s Wedding marked the kick off of my summer, and Serge and Liza’s unity concluded it. Both are Christian weddings, so you get the conservative aspect. Since Ken is one of our elder’s son and someone that is ‘old,’ naturally it’s a traditional conservative Chinese Christian wedding. Whereas Serge and Liza are I guess Americanized Armenians, so we drank booz non-stop Friday to Sunday (I don’t think I had this much alcohol in one weekend). The ceremony was held on Saturday, of course, not knowing a word Father Daniel was talking about, but with the aid of intoxication, I just enjoyed the catholic-looking church and day dreamed about what my own wedding will be like.

A week after the first summer wedding, my brother and I went off to Vegas – The Sin City. This place is truly a modern engineering marvel (if you remove the hookers and hooker-wannabies.) Although not a big fan of gambling, I still manage to waste 300$ on black jack and slot machines. Good thing we were there with my mom and my cousin, so all the other expanses were covered, including booz and souvenirs. We were there for four days then we left for Denver, Colorado. For those of you who think central America is composed of deserts, hicks and fat ugly girls…let me tell you something, you are dead wrong! The scenery of Denver is breathe taking and often jaw dropping…as someone that hates to write and cannot write, I’ll just leave those artistic descriptions to my trusty digital camera and my website. I have only one conclusion when I left Denver and Vegas - I got to travel more often, NJ scenery is depressing.

Two weeks following my Denver return, I had to embark on a 200mile bike trip for Multiple Sclerosis fundraiser. My friend Howay and I got all pumped up and ready for this, only to be put into total humiliation and even submission by this girl Amanda. We had our 800$ semi-professional racing bikes whereas she has this year 1980 half rusted, 30lb+, girly bike…it even came with a bell; Howay biked 125miles then his legs gave out, I biked 177miles before calling mercy, Amada biked as much as I did because ‘she didn’t want to make us mucho guys feel bad.’ Nevertheless it was an amazing trip, really looking forward to finish this 200mile mark next summer.

As of work I was pretty busy the entire summer. Starting this summer I was put in charge of Hofstra’s registration process, this included beta testing the new registration website, organizing who is doing what, setup a local intranet system at home as well as on site. After the Summer Conference my team and I had to report all the bugs we encountered and submit various other tedious stuff. On top of this, I had to start my thesis so I can get some momentum going, in case you are interested, my thesis topic is Analyzing Cheveron Shell with ANSYS. It’s a 100% computational research, so I wouldn’t have to deal with anything physical…thus again shattered my dream of ‘building’ things as an engineer. My summer work eventually shifted to finishing up a program I started for my professor 2 years ago. It is a Java program that can calculate the stress intensity of any given curvilinear cracks in two-dimensional general solids. The program should be published within the next month, although my professor did most of the hard work (he did the computational part, found money to pay me, I did everything else) he agreed to publish the paper under my name…more money, power and fame for me! Yippie! If you are nerdy and have nothing better to do, the beta site is here, follow the instruction and try the program, let me know how it runs.

Aside from my massive amount of work, I still managed to squeeze out time for displaying my body so others can stumble. Went to the beach three times and Mountain Creek water park once. Biked to Bear Mountain twice with dad and once with Alan. Ate DQ Chocolate dipped cones almost every single weekend. Spent almost every single weekend with brothers and sisters from fellowship. Started a new model project (F-18 Super Hornet.) Managed to pickup a new web designing language (Ruby on Rails.) Read 4 spiritual books (if you know me, I don’t read….at all.) And of course, actively participated the online BattleField. And how can I forget the two new members of our house: A pug by the name of Nipple and her childhood friend, the Persian Cat.

This has been a long and interesting summer. Seeing friends commit to marriage one by one makes me wonder what will happen to me next summer. Who can have the time to hangout and chill anymore. As depressing as it is, its also exciting to know that in couple of years, they’ll be coming to my wedding too. But as of next summer, who knows, I might still be working on my thesis, jobless, a slave to the US Government, or hopefully I’ll get to relive this summer with more places to go, more money to spend, more girls to see <smack!>, and less work to worry about!

But does anyone ever get this sweet feeling toward work, that is so fun they rather stay in to work than to go out?
