I have returned to you, my non-existent Xanga audience. I know I haven't blogged much this summer, so I promise to deliver to you in this one entry a whole summer's worth of wise insights and comedic anecdotes. Well, maybe not. But I will post a lot of pictures and give you an update on what I've been up to...

I started off the summer by moving churches. I stepped down as the college pastor at The Open Door to take on a full-time position as the High School pastor at Good Stewards Church (the English-Speaking ministry that I attend there is called Good News Chapel). I'm pretty spoiled at GSC, and I'm really enjoying it... there are a lot of things that I'm thankful for here. But that'll have to wait for another entry...

In July, I got ordained at GSC through the Talbot Evangelical Church Association. The whole ceremony was a lot of fun for me. Actually receiving the title of "reverend" is kinda whatevers for me. But what I really enjoyed about the ordination ceremony was seeing so many of my friends from so many different circles all together in one room.

Speaking of man-love, I got to meet and hang out with one of my many man-crushes over the summer. No, not Jason Mraz or Zach Braff... this is Erwin McManus.

I pretty much spent the rest of summer getting to know my new ministry, as well as prepping for a couple retreats. I had the privilege of speaking at two youth retreats at the end of August... one for Good Stewards and the other for Good Shepherd. I really enjoyed speaking at both of them, but I was pretty wiped out after the two retreats because they were literally back to back... 11 messages in 8 days.

Speaking of pwnage, here are some pictures of one of our two staff-versus-students tackle football game. Actually, it's just pictures of staff owning the students. There really weren't any highlights for the students since according to Tank, the staff was "the most dominate force in football history." By the way, we also rocked them in basketball, too.

I really enjoy this last picture because 1) Sam got juked so bad that he's on the ground (crying), 2) Even though Sam is out of the play, Ronnie is going to hit him anyway, 3) Tank looks really happy because 4) Eric is about to get pwn'd... BIZAT!

And in conclusion, it was great to be able to lead our students to worshiping the one true God at retreat.

After walking around and enjoying each other's company, we quickly and naturally decided to fight. Tom and I underestimated Liz's willingness to fight dirty and hit us with cheap shots such as this...

In other news...

This past weekend, I had the chance to go on a short trip to Mexico with some folks from my church. My church is sending a mission team to Mexico in a couple weeks, and so we went to scout out the area and the people that the team will be ministering to.

The team will be ministering to Oaxaca Mexican Indians who work seasonally as migrant workers, usually picking fruit and vegetables for wealthier, land-owning Mexicans. They make roughly a dollar a day, and are unable to obtain other jobs due to lack of education and/or resources.

Here's a picture of the type of housing available to these migrant workers. Notice that there's no electricity, running water, or even windows. These people live as animals and are basically treated as livestock.

Meanwhile, the vegetables that they pick are provided housing with carefully regulated temperatures and supply of food. After all, these vegetables have value and worth in Mexico while the humans that pick them are absolutely worthless.

We live in a messed up world. Anyway, I got ordained last weekend. I'll be sure to post pictures as soon as I get them. But for now, I'll close this post with a benediction. Just kidding. I'm a monkey.

The Longest Day Of the Year

When Xanga was down and out of commission on Wednesday, that day may have felt like the longest day of the year for those of you addicted to eprops and Xanga-fueled procrastination (Lisa Higaki). But being that it was the Summer Solstice, yesterday was technically the longest day of the year.

Personally, I made it a point yesterday to fully enjoy the glorious fifteen hours of sunlight that we received here in Southern California by delighting in one of God's most spectacular natural wonders: Facebook.

I also went to see Norah Jones at the Greek Theatre. I was so impressed by her performance... WOW. Her voice is absolutely amazing. Plus, I got to see the show with some fun folks from The Open Door, none of whom I've had the chance to play with since I left The Open Door for Good Stewards Church five weeks ago.

And speaking of talented musicians, it's Jason Mraz's 30th birthday on Saturday. I'm going to celebrate by driving to San Diego and looking for his house... who's with me?

My Ordination Exam

For the past few weeks, I've been a bit socially reclusive while studying for my final ordination exam. But as of today, my exam has come and gone... and I passed! I'm really dumb, and so I'm convinced that I wouldn't have passed this exam or made it through this entire process without the support, encouragement, and prayers of those around me... thanks, y'all!

There'll be an ordination ceremony sometime in the near future, so if you'd like to come see me transform into Reverend Yun (that sounds gross), stay tuned for more info...

Actually, my past few weeks hasn't been completely void of fun and games. A couple weekends ago, I got to see Joshua Radin in concert for the second time. He was awesome. And what made it more fun was that at the show, I saw Tracy and Jovanna from Hanmi, Academy Award-winning actress and singer Sissy Spacek, and Chris Parnell from Saturday Night Live. I also saw Zach Braff and Donald Faison from Scrubs.

Zach Braff and Joshua Radin are good friends, so I had a pretty good feeling that Zach would be at the concert. And since Scrubs is my favorite TV show, I came up with an ingenius scheme that I had planned out weeks in advance that would allow me to meet (and hug) Zach Braff. However, he was in the VIP section all night long, and so I had to settle for taking stalker-like photos of him from a distance... sigh.

The fun continued this past weekend when a bunch of us from church threw Tracy a surprise birthday party. The party had a Wizard of Oz/Wicked theme, and so a bunch of us put on costumes that fit the theme. This picture was stolen from Jason, photographer extraordinaire. By the way, who's that hottie dressed as the Tin-Man?

Even the desserts fit the black and green color scheme of Wicked...

And tonight, I got to go to my first Dodger game! The Dodgers got killed 9-1, but it's all good... I got to eat a Dodger Dog and take home a free fleece... awesome!

Everglow Retreat

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to head up to the Bay Area to speak at a youth retreat.

The six-hour drive from LA to Mountain View wasn't too bad. The 5 freeway was pretty long, dusty, dry, and boring, but I managed to pass the time by listening to a lot of sermons and Jason Mraz. And once I got off of the 5 and hit the 152 freeway, the drive got a lot nicer. Here are some pictures that I took from my car while not paying attention to the road.

The Bay Area is really nice. It's greener than LA, the water is drinkable, the sun stays up longer, and the air is much cleaner. In fact, you can even see stars in the sky... something that I forgot that you're supposed to be able to do.

My good buddy Chris is the pastor of the youth ministry that I spoke for. Here he is doing his thing...

In short, I had such a great time hanging out with Chris, meeting his students and teachers, and being at their retreat! Thanks for having me, y'all!

My Monkeys

Ever since I started listening to Jason Mraz and Toca Rivera, I've really come to enjoy and appreciate the stripped down sound of an acoustic guitar with a djembe...

...so today, I made my monkeys Kevin and Christine come over so that I could train them to be the next Jason and Toca. Good times!
