Pleasantville

Think Singapore resembles Pleasantville alot. Everything looks picture perfect. The trees are in place. I don't see weeds sprouting from the road side pavements. Traffic jams aren't that bad. Buildings seem to be squeeky clean with fresh coats of paint. The toilets are even cleaned like every 10 minutes. And i found out that the government provided funds for all food outlets to renovate the toilets. So every damn toilet in the country is in tip top condition. There's toilet paper all the time too. Cool I guess. But odd at the same time.

The world should not be perfect. There should in some ways be anomalies, how else will progress happen? But the thing is, Singapore does progress. This instilled sense of routine and perfection appears to be cultivated at societal levels. Where we are the ones living the jurisdiction and regulations. We abide. We follow. And the central government, mainly the key Lee family, are the dictators who, *hats off* seems to be doing all the right things.
I respect that they, as politicians, have pulled all the right moves and has fantastically developed the country to a prototype of what a well regulated and controlled country it is.

But, this is what it just is: a well regulated and controlled country.

People do not appear to be questioning. Opposition parties are weak, but mainly because there's nothing much to oppose to. So far everything thus far has been done in the best interest of the people of Singapore. However, we should also remember that a major portion of the workforce are not Singaporeans. And although it doesn't signify a weakness, since most cosmopilation cities are filled with expatriates, but the high level of foreign workers in employees would also mean that the citizens may not have the quality to be the frontrunners of their economy. Which is also mainly because, the economic powerhouses are ruled by the government themselves.

In the country's effort to cultivate a creative mind, they have forgotten ( in my opinion) that creativeness is not taught via courses and festivals and arts conventions. Creativeness is not restricted to film and arts. Its a broad conceth aultivated from young. It can't be taught. It has to be instilled. Its not about colours, whas red n black n white. Its whether you can see them as how they should or should not be. There's no absolute right answer to everything.

With the country's stringent and stressful education system, I don't see how creativeness can be cultivated. Where children are consciously aware of the discrimination they will encounter when they don't score an A in the exam, (Correction, when they do score an A but its not a 100% perfect score), where will they have the chance to explore their childhood, of what its like being 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 and being a child, having fun and playing and getting to know themselves? And the worse part comes where those who are left behind have a miserable regretful life ahead of them, which has in a way been pre-determined. For the ones who make it, they may continue to adhere to the rules, to the socially constructed life they were brought up in, and continue instilling this culture in their future generations. Its never ending. Possibly an uprise could occur when the unfortunate and ostrocised ones realise that they have been victim to a system. A prototype of perfection, which has resulted in an unhappy and less fulfilling life as opportunities were closed to them when they were 10 years old. 10 years old-an age where you don't have bills to pay and school was to learn and play.
Oh well... i wonder what else is in store ..

Check in on Week 3

Its my third week in Singapore...

Haven't really settled in but well its cuz i can't move in to my soon to be home yet! So temporarily i'm at Somerset Bencoolen for a month.

  • 7 minutes walk from my office at Atrium-hence Plaza Singapura too;
  • 6 minutes from the new Cathay cinemas
  • 1 minute from 2 7-elevens;
  • 30seconds from a 24 hour coffeeshop;
  • 1 minute from another huge ass kopitiam
  • 5 minutes from the bars on Princep Street!

Though, i get the feeling that eventhough Bencoolen street is right opposite the Nanyang Fashion Academy, and down the road to SMU, the area seems a bit dodgy! i think its cuz of the 2 funny looking hotels.. Bencoolen hotel and Hotel 81. Its filled with tourists, from all over, but it isn't exactly Ritz or Conrad. Its like on the other end of the scale, but still looks kinda decent. hHAHAHAAH...

So anyway life's good staying at this Ascott run service apartment. If i look back to it 10 years from now, i'll be like WOW didn't think the company would do this for me! Breakfast everyday 7 days a week, laundry paid for and they clean the apartment everyday! and my towels too are changed everyday! FRESH towels daily. And i get a tub. The shower is so great too so i end up taking longer showers (yes i take showers now a days, sometimes even twice a day!)HAHHAHAHA... With cable and internet connection also provided, and a fully equipped kitchen, DVD player and a hi fi. Only thing i don't get is a view!!

Walking to Bugis Junction, which i visit practically every weekend, is just 10 minutes, with food and shopping and coffee and all. Got my mobile K750i with M1 for so damn cheap: SGD233 including registration for the number and a screen protector for the phone. Love my baby sony!

Also 10 minutes walk from Sim Lin Tower, where i got this baby:

ASUS AF8 at quite a good price! SGD2200 for:

1. laptop: Centrino Core Duo, with 1GB RAM, 50GB+30GB harddrives, and built in webcam, and the full specs any laptops should have, well except for the graphic card that enables 3D games (i have no clue what they called it already);
2. Linksys router ;
3. Bit Defender anti virus package.

So ever since my AF8, life's been better. HAHAHAHHAA... internet junkie. Well everything's back to normal, i surf the net, i read my daily promuda mails and i play my yahoo games.

OK i just realised how mundane my life is turning to!
