Of Mice and Cats
I know you might believe that the mice and cats don’t get along with each other since the beginning of time, but that’s not entirely true. You see, at first, the animals had established a Constitution which gave everyone equal rights. It didn’t matter if you were small or big, with or without fur, or had an exotic pattern on your back. “Everyone from now on is equal”, said Lion King the Great, the Founder. As the time went on, however, animals had broken off from the Animal Kingdom into separate communities, establishing their own little kingdoms. One of such was Margaritaville. It was named after the Great Cat, Queen Margarita, who was the initiator of the separation from the Kingdom. Usually, when separations like this occurred, the population of one kingdom included only one race, whether it were the Horses, Pigs, or Alligators. Margaritaville was unique among the others. Cats and Mice coexisted under one rule, under one Queen. These were the good years in the history of Margaritaville, but the winds were about to turn. Things were about to change.
Margaritaville had one of the strongest economies among the kingdoms because of its diversity and the use of combined skills of the two races. The Cats had creative ideas and the Mice were really good when it came to the detailed work. Put together, they achieved more, better and faster. However, such bonds were forming not always for the best of the country. Many street gangs were formed this way. The most successful gang, and the most dangerous one, you could say, was called “Banda”. It consisted of four members- two cats and two mice. Mice would sneak unnoticed into the banks or stores at night, and later their gang buddies Cats would easily rob the owners. This was just one of the schemes that was used by the gangs, there were plenty of others.
The Aristocats were starting to give up on the Constitution, and regarded the mix of the two races as one of the biggest mistakes that was ever made. The robberies were putting the economy, and most importantly, the King’s treasury, down. King Willie the Flamboyant Tigger was constantly putting the Mice down and treating them as dirt. Most of the court decisions were ruled in the Cats’ favor. Mice were easily prosecuted, whether it was for treason or for a stolen gum. The reason did not matter. You might view this as an act of racism or discrimination, but no, it was not that.
Jealousy, not hate, dominated the minds of the Aristocats and the King himself. Why is it that now Mice are considered as the most sneaky? Cats were always better at that, the best. Major discoveries made in the scientific laboratories were always attributed to the Cats. Nobody seemed to notice it, though, because who would challenge the intellect of the Cats? A Mouse on the cover of the fashion magazine? Who would dare to do such a thing? It was just obvious that Cats, and only Cats, were forever to be the icons of beauty.
After the incident with the front cover, the editor in chief had mysteriously disappeared, and was not heard of since. Soon after these news were released to the public, there were series of marches and protests in front of the White Palace. “Why is it so bad”, they said “that a Mouse is modeling for a magazine? We’re all equal, so why should it matter?” The commoners had no reasons to hate the Mice. They’ve been living together for so long that they regarded one another as a family. When the rumors went around about the street gangs, Banda in particular, commoners would just say, “there are many Cats who are involved in criminal activities too, why should we blame just the Mice?” They were right. The mastermind of Banda was actually a Cat. Swamp Fox, they’d call him. No one except for the Aristocats considered him as an actual criminal. Swamp Fox would never rob the business that belonged to the good Cats or Mice, he’d go after the corrupt bankers, who were always in favor of King Willie.
Swamp Fox was not only the leader of Banda, but also the leader of the opposition against the King and the Aristocats. He and the other three members of the gang- Matilda, Dash, and Aniri, were all part of the conspiracy. The "Tom and Jerry" cartoon was part of a propaganda campaign launched by Banda to make more citizens speak out against the suppressive authority. Soon enough, Margaritaville was divided in those who respected the Mice and those who supported King Willie the Flamboyant Tigger. The Cats that supported equality would wear black Mickey Mouse hats to show their desire to continue living in unity. Peaceful demonstrations of the opposition did not bring any resolution whatsoever. King Willie regarded the riots as a treachery against the crown, and made an order to shoot anyone who appeared radical or was “talking nonsense concerning equality and common good.”
After the first shots were fired, there was no turning back. A civil war had broken out. This will later be known as M.M., the Margaritaville Massacre, during which three quarters of the population were killed by the Aristocats’ military force. Many Cats fled to the other kingdoms, but they could not quite fit into the community of the Tigers, Lions, or Cheetahs. Neither could Mice find the common ground with the Rats. Whoever could not escape and was left in Margaritaville, suffered from great epidemics and hunger. King Willie the Flamboyant Tigger was abandoned in his White Palace, where he had committed a suicide, tying himself up in a plastic bag. All members of the Banda were killed, but they had died a honorable death. They were considered heroes among the survivors. Banda, after all, spoke out and fought for equal rights.
Later the children and the grandchildren of the survivors would go back and try to rebuild the once glorious Margaritaville, but that would be later, much later. As for now, the kingdom that once was so strong and progressive is lying in ruins. Many rumors go around whether Swamp Fox truly believed in equality, or did he do it for his lover Matilda, who was a Mouse. Some claim that this quartet was up to no good and that Swamp Fox was going to take over the kingdom once King Willie would be out of the picture. Who knows if any of this is true, or is just another speculation. One thing is for certain, this was not supposed to happen. It was intended to be a society of Mice and Cats, which would live together as one big family and make Margaritaville a prosperous kingdom. |
