| Finally...Finally...a candidate I can get excited about. A candidate who supports the Christian values this great country was founded on. A candidate who has what it takes. If you haven't already, I encourage you to visit www.mikehuckabee.com and read up on Gov. Huckabee's stance on the issues. After you determine that he's a guy worth supporting...tell your friends and family. Even consider making a contribution! $10...$20...it all helps!
(For you IBLP folks out there, Huckabee was even a big supporter of ALERT in Arkansas ) | | |
| Is the God America was founded on, the Christian God?This is a paper that I wrote for an English class when I was at Kennesaw State University back in 2001. Over the past six years, society has continued to evolve, and it is more important than ever for us to know the answer to this much debated question.
We live in a nation that has “In God We Trust” printed on every piece of its currency. We live in a nation with a flag whose pledge of allegiance contains the words, “One Nation Under God.” We live in a nation that has recently experienced unimaginable tragedy and as a result, innumerable signs have been posted all across our country on cars, businesses, homes and billboards that all contain one phrase, “God Bless America.” Who is this “God” we speak of? Is He Is He some distant, unreachable dictator? Is He anything or anyone we want Him to be? In 1954, when Congress added the words “under God” to our pledge of allegiance, were they speaking of Brahman, Krishna, Buddha, Bodhisattva, Allah, or anyone who thinks they are a “god?” The intent, I believe was not to be used as, “One Nation Under ____.” Under gods?” Is it a “fill-in the blank” with whoever we want? Most certainly not!
America was founded on the one and only Christian God. The Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary defines God as: “the supreme or ultimate reality: as: the Being in power, wisdom, and goodness whom men worship as creator and ruler of the universe.” (Webster 358) In the Bible, God clearly says through the prophet Isaiah, “…Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, And besides Me there is no savior.” Isaiah 43:10-11 (NKJV). On Mount Sinai, while speaking to Moses in a clear, audible voice, the Lord commanded, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3 (NKJV). Jesus also says in Mark 12:29 (KJV), “…Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord.” In 1st Timothy 3:16 (NKJV), the apostle Paul writes, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.” Also, in John 14:9 (NKJV), Philip asks Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? John 14:9 (NKJV) Jesus Christ clearly said, "I and My Father are one." John 10:30 (NKJV)
After much research, I have found innumerable writings and much evidence that many of our Founding Fathers were followers of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This means believing the Biblical scripture, “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NKJV) Even the first prayer in Congress, September 7, 1774, was clearly prayed in the name of Jesus Christ. It reads as follows: “Be Thou present O God of Wisdom and direct the counsel of this Honorable Assembly; enable them to settle all things on the best and surest foundations; that the scene of blood may be speedily closed; that Order, Harmony and Peace may be effectually restored, and the Truth and Justice, Religion and Piety, prevail and flourish among the people. Preserve the health of their bodies, and the vigor of their minds, shower down on them, and the millions they here represent, such temporal Blessings as Thou seest expedient for them in this world, and crown them with everlasting Glory in the world to come. All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Saviour, Amen.” (Federer 136)
Patrick Henry, a founding father who held many respectable positions in military and government boldly declared, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” (Federer 289)
While president of Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin delivered this powerful speech to the Constitutional Convention, which showed his knowledge of God through the Bible. “I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth–that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that “except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages.” (Federer 248)
John Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence said, “I have examined all religions, as well as my narrow sphere, my straightened means, and my busy life, would allow; and the result is that the Bible is the best Book in the world. It contains more philosophy than all the libraries I have seen.” (Federer 13) Another signer of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams, declared, “Principally, and first of all, I resign my soul to the Almighty Being who gave it, and my body I commit to the dust, relying on the merits of Jesus Christ for the pardon of my sins.” (Federer 25)
James Madison, named “the Father of the Constitution” and the fourth President of the United States emphatically said, “Cursed be all that learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ.” (Federer 410)
Known as “the Ratifier of the Constitution,” Alexander Hamilton said, “I have carefully examined the evidences of the Christian religion, and if I was sitting as a juror upon its authenticity I would unhesitatingly have my verdict in its favor. I can prove its truth as clearly as any proposition ever submitted to the mind of man.” (Federer 274)
Patrick Henry, an American Revolutionary Leader and Orator stated, “Doctor, I wish you to observe how real and beneficial the religion of Christ is to a man about to die...I am, however, much consoled by reflecting that the religion of Christ has, from its first appearance in the world, been attacked in vain by all the wits, philosophers, and wise ones, aided by every power of man, and its triumphs have been complete.” (Federer 290)
Of course I know that all of our forefathers were not followers of Christ. While many people originally made the journey to the “new land” for the purpose of freedom of religion, many others came to seek gold and wealth. However, Christopher Columbus wrote in his personal log that his purpose in seeking undiscovered worlds was to, “…bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the heathens. [And] …bring the Word of God to unknown coastlands.” (Federer 119) Thomas Jefferson, our third President, and author of the Declaration of Independence, was a deist. Although not a Christian, he clearly stated his views of Jesus Christ. He said, “My views…are the result of a life of inquiry and reflection, and very different from the anti-christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions. To the corruptions of Christianity I am, indeed, opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian in the only sense in which he wished anyone to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines in preference to all others…” –p. 326 also, “I hold the precepts of Jesus as delivered by Himself, to be the most pure, benevolent and sublime which have ever been preached to man…” (Federer 330)
As years have passed by, so have many of these writings and others I found from history textbooks. Books can be altered and facts withheld, but past history cannot change. The truth cannot be any clearer: The majority of our Country’s founding fathers were followers of Christ and built this great Nation on the unchanging, all true God that is spoken of in the infallible Holy Bible.
