i went to the firetower last friday with corinna, mom, dustin, and toby. corinna really wanted a picture of her and toby laying on their backs in the leaves but of course toby was only interested in humping the ground, so corinna copied.

i don't know how this happened...!

my mom thought it was really funny that dustin and i had matching outfits on. me in my new ill-fitting sweater, and dustin in his new carharts.

my mom insisted that i get my picture taken with this branch. i hate getting my picture taken so of course i was talking while she took this.

soon all the leaves will be gone and these will look like skeletons.

this tree was amazing. i can't wait until the winter when all the leaves are gone and it will be a true silhouette.

after our walk my mom and i walked up the firetower. corinna, dustin, and toby stayed on the ground since toby is scared of heights and grates.

i watched stevie last night. it was interesting on a lot of levels and it was filmed really well. the director interviewed everyone without any bias towards a side. it was honest, i guess the way a documentary is supposed to be. anyway, in the end he goes to prison. judging from the date of the film i assumed he was still incarcerated. i looked him up in the illinois dept of corrections inmate search and he was there. i usually spend an hour or two every thursday night looking up inmates for pages, just to make sure they are still in the same facility so our books don't get returned. inmates get moved around a lot. i'm curious to see tonight if he has ever requested a book from pages. i wonder what prison has been like for him. it wasn't the right thing for him, but it's not right for most people. i don't know what i'm saying really. it was just weird to look up a person on a website so familar that's usually a bunch of strangers and know the guy's background story and everything. anyway.. i recommend the movie. it's at mcpl, if you're in btown.

apple picking - 10/22/05

after we picked apples we went inside to the store to get other things like caramel, pumpkin butter, and pickles!

embarrassingly, i haven't made any other apple treats yet. the apples are almost three weeks old now! they are in the fridge for safe keeping. i'll make a pie soon.

this is a pretty bad picture but i took it against a white wall so you could see the shape of the mask. i went as a black bird (complete with tan legwarmers as legs!) but mostly got "are you spy vs spy?" some people also suggested i change my costume title to a plague doctor, the thing in beetlejuice, something that director of some marilyn manson videos would create, or... there were others. i forget now.

this recipe comes from the "beyond the moon" cookbook. the book is one of my favorites and i've checked it out from the library many times. i wish i had a copy. i changed the recipe a little bit, so i typed it out. i ate it for three days straight without getting bored of it. it's really simple to make but uses a lot of pans (especially if you make biscuits at the same time) so get ready to wash dishes.

indian spiced butternut squash soup (4 servings)

3 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed (i used acorn squash and it was good)
3/8 cup red lentils
1 tbsp canola oil
1/2 cup onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
1/2 tsp salt
turmeric
black pepper
whole cloves
ground cardamon
black mustard seeds
cumin seeds
nutmeg
cayenne
(or you can substitute all of these with 2 tsp curry powder if you want. biting the cumin seeds is the best part though)
1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
1 medium tomato, diced
1 cup milk

cook the squash and lentils in 2 1/2 cups of water in a large soup pot until tender, about 20 minutes.

puree the squash, lentils, and cooking water in a food processor/blender. return to pot and set aside.

heat the oil in a skillet with medium heat. saute the onion and garlic until tender.

add sauteed vegetables to the soup pot. stir in the spices. i prepared the spices in a seperate container before pouring them in. i estimated what to put in and didn't measure or record what i used. the whole of it made about a tablespoon. add lemon juice.

heat soup to simmer. add the tomato and milk. simmer for 10 minutes more, stirring occasionally.

i have five more pictures on my film from apple picking over a week ago. maybe i'll put on my halloween mask again and take pictures since i haven't yet. i didn't take pictures of the zombie parade either! there are some really good photos here. i'm behind david in this one as we attacked two old men. i'm not in any others but a lot of my friends are. such good get-ups! here is another set. my zombie face is in the third picture, with david behind me this time. i wish i got a picture of my whole outfit. it was all half-cut-up dresses from my fabric pile. i think it turned out okay.

i hope that someday there is a way to transfer scents online. if there was right now and you could smell this apple tart baking and this pear butter melting you'd be at my house in a second.

i went apple picking today with corinna, nicole, jessie, mary, chiara and her daughters oona and florence. corinna brought toby too. i'd never gone before but it was what i expected: awesome. i brought along my olympus om-2 because mkl took my digital camera on tour. this is a good thing he did because it's forcing me to take film pictures. i'll probably finish the roll and develop it by the end of the week.

i think my tongue reacts to heat the same way the rest of my mouth does. i ate some soup on wednesday afternoon and it was too hot. i wasn't in a position to spit it out so i burned my tongue more than i could have. now, over three days later, the front 2/3rds of my tongue still feels like a giant canker sore. the first five times i brushed my teeth my tastebuds bled. they still do a little but... ok, i'll stop. if i'm eating with you and looking weird, forgive me. tonight dustin asked me if i was on drugs because i was staring into space looking weird. i was only concentrating on eating without the food touching my tongue, but that is impossible.

i got a little creeped out being at home by myself last night. i watched the sea which wasn't scary at all. instead it made me even more jealous of mkl's trip to iceland, although i wouldn't want to go to the small town it was based in very much. afterwards i watched some previews on the dvd. one was for the eye which i've already seen and isn't very scary but the part with the dude floating in the elevator kept repeating in my mind as i walked around the house at 3:30am. i scare myself too much. supposedly i'm going to haunted houses next weekend. we'll see if i can handle it.

i took lorosi to the vet last week to get his teeth cleaned because in april the vet acted like it was a really big deal that i do it within six months. when i got there i realized how much it wasn't a big deal, but oh well. they said he wasn't cooperative when they were trying to give him anesthetic so they shaved his leg! it still hasn't grown back at all.

turn pale played last friday, the first time i've seen them since july! it was awesome and lots of people came. they played really old songs and a group of people were really excited about that.

they played at a new space which hasn't really been named yet. i guess it's just "the church." the blow played there and mkl played there as drekka a few weeks ago. thanksgiving is playing tomorrow and i'm sure many more good shows are coming up there. i love the space there.

for greg harvester's birthday he wanted a french theme since he was "supposed" to be in france but "got stuck" in btown. i think he had a good time.

why, how couldn't he when there were.... dozens of baguettes! stripes! berets!

and the eiffel tower...!

i took a photo of myself in my french costume when i got home but it was dark so the picture was hard to lighten:

corinna turned 22! i brought my camera along to the pot luck and the bowling alley but didn't get it out once! how awful. i made her a cake the night before and took a picture of it, though (before the icing melted).

mkl is leaving for a drekka tour tomorrow morning. he'll be gone the normal time (a week before halloween - the day or two before thanskgiving) and to the normal place (europe). i don't think anyone in europe reads this but just in case, here are the dates!

nick drove mkl and i to ann arbor last night to see sigur rós. it was really amazing. even the opening act, amina, was exciting. one of the girls played a saw. they all seemed incredibly practiced -- they would move about the stage like they were programmed. it wasn't bad though. i say that in a good way! i was pretty happy we didn't get stuck sitting next to anyone eating popcorn or talking, and i guess it's not really possible to sit next to someone at a sigur rós show who is going to sing along the whole time. they rocked out a lot which i was sort of expecting but not *that* much rocking. they started and ended the show with a really cool netted screen that created silhouettes. it looked amazing. you can see pictures from other shows at the tour diary. i didn't get to take any pictures because the theatre made me check my camera at the door -- it was too big to hide. during viðrar vel til loftárása they silenced all instruments and turned off nearly all of the lights in the middle of the song. the silence lasted at least 30 seconds and no one screamed or clapped. it was incredible.

we were up in the balcony and i've never really seen a good picture of the band so i didn't know what their faces looked like. after the show we walked behind the theatre where their busses were parked. there were about 20 people already back there by the exit so mkl walked over the busses where 2 girls from amina were talking. he was excited to give them drekka buttons and talk about reykjavik. georg was standing by the bus (who i only recognized by the color of his shirt) with the girls in amina. i wanted to tell him that when they froze time my mind almost exploded but didn't get up the courage. eventually jónsi and kjartan came over. both of them are in the croc posse!! jónsi had red ones and kjartan was wearing orange ones. i had no idea that jónsi had a slight lazy eye. that plus his stance made him look even more humble that he probably is. i was too shy to say hi. they were all really sweet when mkl talked to them, and they were looking tired. we let them be and began the 6 drive home.

i would say the drive was worth it but nick did all the driving.

other:

- the pages to prisoners pack-a-thon is tomorrow night. all night! come by if you have a few hours, or even just one. it's at boxcar.

- the manion companion no longer exists. corinna has an 8o'clock class on tuesdays and i didn't feel like doing it all by myself. we will continue the radio show in the winter.

- the inspection of the house didn't go as well as i'd planned. lots of minor defects, but enough that i am sending a response to the seller so that she needs to fix leaks and electrical work before i hand her thousands of dollars.

- lorosi likes watching tv.

- when corinna, dustin and i went to eat mexican food last week, corinna caught dustin playing air guitar behind my back!

- drekka played a good noise set at the new space on 5th/adams -- the old church. the top floor is really steep, descending towards the stage. it's a good space. it was storming and mkl's set was sort of throbbing. some of the noises matched the lightning. afterwards i ran to the car so i could pull it up to the door for mkl to load his stuff up. i dropped my keys on the street so i stood in the rain waiting for the lightning to light up enough of the road for me to spot them.

- a hook got stuck in my car's tire. it was raining and it was late at night so i didn't see it on the road. mkl and i were going to pick up corinna and dustin for a pretty pointless trip to the grocery -- mostly for fun. i only got one block before a huge clicking sound was hitting my car. i pulled the hook out and drove back home as fast as i could before it flattened. worst of all, it hit the tire i just bought in august when someone slashed my tire. have you ever seen anything like this?

i thought i was doing really well but i totally lost.

"my grandparents are over."

at the time it meant that they were over at my house. since that time my grandfather has passed away and i wonder if this sentence is an omen suggesting that i should call my grandma, but it's midnight. *worried*

i haven't felt like updating recently at all. maybe soon?

i drank about a tablespoon of cetraria islandica schnapps about 20 minutes ago and i can still feel it in my stomach.

i think i'm getting sick. i'm going to las vegas on sunday and i don't want to have the worst-feeling-of-my-life again on the airplane when my head gets pressurized. i'm NOT getting sick is what i have to say.

i've been reading the painted bird which i guess is a book that you're supposed to read in high school. un/fortunately i didn't go to a high school that made you read certain books so i'm getting to it now. i think it's taking over my dreams and making me feel disgusted by humans and also uncertain about futures. like drekka says, the world that surrounds us is full of possibilities. if i think about that too long i get really scared.

except... i had a dream that mkl found a small grover body with really long strands of yarn for arms and legs. that was nice.
