| it's only three weeks into my senior year of college (which is another insane thought in itself) and it's been a little stressful.
in the first week, i had two people tell me about different situations they were going through. one was in a car accident which totaled her car. another works with me at the daily cougar (UH newspaper, for those of you who are obviously NOT my friend...just kidding!) and she thought the computer with the entire newspaper on it crashed at like midnight, which would mean we only had one hour before the paper went to the printer to put it back together. needless to say, both situations were very intense, and both these people used the phrase "thank God" when they got out of them okay.
seeing the effects that Hurricane Ike brought has made me think how sweet it is that when i say "thank God," i literally am talking to the Creator of the earth and giving Him praise. for other people it might just be a phrase, but do you ever think why do people who say they aren't Christian and don't believe in God turn to thank Him when something bad happens? it comes out of their mouth without thinking. it's their gut reaction. and it's because every human being was created in His image, and deep down i think everyone realizes that God does exist, whether they choose to acknowledge it or not.
i was in dallas when Ike actually went through Houston because i had to cover the football game which got moved to SMU because of the hurricane. when word came out that school would reopen on tuesday (another ridiculous story for another time) we made the drive back to houston, so i got to see the effects from sort of an outsider's view.
on the UH campus, trees are everywhere. streetlights run parallel with instead of perpendicular to the streets. lines at gas stations wind around the block, and even finding one with gas to sell is difficult. lines at grocery stores go out the door, and shelves are empty. people are lining up on the block next to me at the FEMA distribution center to get food and water because they don't have power or water at their house, or maybe don't have a house left at all.
seeing such signs of absolute destruction next to the beginnings of life going on again is heartbreakingly beautiful. the weather has been much cooler these few days, so to feel the wind on my face as i walk around campus with tree limbs scattered everywhere literally takes my breath away. it simultaneously breaks my heart to see my city and my campus so broken and makes me so very thankful for everything that i have.
"For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock". Psalm 27:4-5

| whenever i watch hannah montana, i always think that the whole idea is pretty ridiculous. it doesn't make me enjoy it any less, because tv shows don't have to be realistic to be fun, but come on, who would really NOT recognize that it's the same girl just because she has a blonde wig?
apparently, my daddy. vincent told him they were the same girl the other day, because he honestly didn't now. how silly. | | |
| at school we got new shuttle busses, and there are new bars to hang onto when you stand that are short enough that i can reach. THANKS UH! | | |
| i just discovered that the numbers on the calendar icons on macs and ipod touches (is that what the plural would be?) change to say the date that it actually is! FUN! | | |
| yesterday i stepped on my cell phone charger and one of the prongs (or whatever the metal part that goes into the electrical socket is called) pierced my heel and started bleeding, and now it kind of hurts to walk. i've been watching HOUSE over the break, and now i'm convinced that i have to travel to the princeton hospital in new jersey so house, chase, cameron, and foreman can all have a look at me, or else i will be infected with some weird unheard of disease, house will have to drill me with questions about my mysterious past, and i will have to faint and undergo numerous MRI's before the case is solved. also i might have another sickness that will be triggered by my stepping on the charger (as is so often the case in house - the symptons that bring the patient into the hospital are never the actualy disease, just something triggered by something else) because in the past week i have encountered two people who thought it was okay to bring their pet dogs into restaurants and put them at the table/bring them into the area where food is being prepared. ummm...gross? these people were NOT blind, they were NOT handicapped, they just value their animals a little too much. if your dog eats at the table in your house, fine, but a restaurant is public property, and other people could be allergic. not to mention, isn't it just a little bit unsanitary? i'm sure house would agree with me, but he would have a much wittier and probably ruder way of saying it. | | |
