Shiny pickle flavored horse apples?

Now that I have your attention:

This site contains both light and heavy reading. In addition to lots of fun and silly things, I write very frankly and often in a raw style about some difficult subject matter. Entries with blue (sad) or red (angry) borders often have warnings. Please read these before you read the entry. If the subject matter is something that you have difficulty with I recommend that you do not read that entry.

I try to rate things appropriately for age. If you notice something that should be rated differently, please let me know.

  • What are your top five movie soundtracks?

    5. Little Mermaid - One of my best friends and I saw this while we were stationed in Monterrey.  We'd cruise town with the windows rolled down blasting out "Under the Sea" and singing along.  Great times.

    4. The Big Easy - Zydeco, Dr. John, Aaron Neville, c'mon what's not to love.

    3. Repo Man - "We've got nothin' better to do...", "All I wanted was a Pepsi!"

    2. There's Something About Mary - Jonathan Richman is my all-time fave.  I've spoken to him once even, and shook his hand.  I only said "Thanks" though.

    1. Harold and Maude - I sang "Trouble", and "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" every weekend through the entire Summer of 1988 as I drove from my adopted mother's house to my job as a camp counselor for angry inner city kids.

  • What is on your weekly grocery list?

    • Monday - (There's a deal because they're overstocked)
    • Tuesday - (but really there's just one)
    • Wednesday - (I'm not sure when, but I'm guessing soon)
    • Thursday - (I have a coupon)
    • Friday - (Half off!)
    • Saturday - (baked fresh and full of sugar)
    • Sunday - (the last on the shelf)
Hopefully I can find everything on my list for the week.

  • What is the best way to approach an awkward and possibly embarrassing question?

It's best to shout these things across a crowded room filled with people you don't know, but wish to impress.

Also, you should be on stilts, so you can be seen.

Also, you should use a kelly green megaphone.

    Also, you should be nude.

  • The scariest thing

The most recent Kween_of_the_Queens challenge was to write about the scariest thing that has ever happened.

I could write about the obvious, my heart attack.  That was certainly scary, but it wasn't the scariest thing that has ever happened to me.

I could write about the car accident we had where the drunk driver hit our car with everyone in it.  That was scary, but the shock of it kind of numbed me to it for all but the first 3 seconds.

I can't write about ghosts and spirits since they don't scare me.  I could write about the vampire that lived in my childhood closet, but he turned out to not be so scary.

I could write about the one rodeo I was in as a kid.
the ticking beating seconds of my heart
before they yanked that dusty rodeo gate open
    half grown anxious bleating calf
bony beneath my skinny boy knees
    lurched into the sawdust arena
like lightning dropping from the sky,
    launching me from it's back
    a fleeting flailing flight
    shoulder kicking dirt
    I rolled and ran
    from the angry little beast
    sweaty grease smeared rodeo clown
    burst between us
    to leer distractingly
enough that I could hop the fence

    THAT was scary.
But not the scariest thing ever.

The scariest thing ever, was when the doctors at Bethesda Naval Hospital decided that they wanted to perform a version on my precious wife and the little breach baby in her tummy.

After failing to find a vein for her IV and making a bruised mess of her arm, several scrubs wearing medical personnel huddled around her Vaseline covered beautiful round belly, and pushed with all their strength.

    And my wife screamed.

    And I was afraid.

I was afraid for my baby.

I was afraid for my wife.

I was afraid of the pain and possible harm.

And I told them to stop.

And she told them to stop.

And after several times, they did.

Caesarean section became more palatable to us that day.

And I will never forget the terror as I watched the military doctors cause my love to scream out in pain, and I worried about everything that could go wrong.

THAT was my scariest moment ever.

  • Words Die (in the) West - about my screen name

There was a nice little featured item about screen names that got me thinking.  I've probably already written about this,  but hey, I'm gonna repeat myself.

zisixi - is vaguely based on my actual name, but is also a little bit of a play on my background studying Mandarin.  The syllables don't actually make real sense in Mandarin, but as individual words, they mean, Word(zi)Die(si)West(xi) which I kinda like.

I relate to this because I love words and poetry, but like the author of the Tao Te Qing implies, there are some things that just can't be summed up with words.  It's as if all the words were dead and we had to find another better way of communicating.  The West part is kind of a self identification as a "Western Taoist".

I pronounce it zuh suh shee, but you can pronounce it any way you like.

  • Wolf for dad (Animated)

My middle child has taught herself how to scan her drawings into the computer, modify them with Gimp, then post them to her favorite website.

She was showing me some of her work, and I noticed an animated image that was part of the website.  I mentioned that she could make animated images for her website.  She took the bait.  That was earlier this evening, since then she's shown me two animated images she's created and posted.  Learning this required that she Google the instructions and read them.  This from a girl who sometimes says she can't read (Dyslexia is so frustrating).

    I'm so proud.
