I caught myself from rolling over, aware that Nina had climbed into the twin bed with me. Stuck. After a thorough check of my limbs (still there!), I double checked that the CGMS sensor was in place. I had the glucose sensor inserted in my stomach yesterday. The office is getting ready to use the new iPRO digital recorder instead of the old bulky sensors, and I'm wearing one for the weekend to test it out.

Dinner (yesterday):
Nachos from Qdoba
Turtle concrete from Silky's

Breakfast (today):
2 Hash browns
2 Eggs with mozzarella

Lunch:
1 bowl Raisin bran
Milk
Glass of strawberry lemonade
Oh, Nina...

Now if she touches like this, will you touch her right back?

It was about that time of my life again, so I stepped into a salon for the first time ever and got a haircut. Nothing fancy, just a straight chop.
It was 30 inches, from scalp to end, and it would take at least 45 minutes every morning to get ready. Not only that, but it was long enough for me to tuck under my pillow when sleeping, and exercising was a right pain, because I had to stop and re-tie my hair; it is shiny and silky, so it doesn't like to stay up for long.

I decided to donate my hair to Locks of Love, a program for kids who have lost their hair to illness/cancer. The hairdresser tied up my hair and measured the length, and I braced as she advanced towards me with the scissors. She took a generous snip, shoulder length. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" I screamed. "I changed my mind, I CHANGED MY MIND!!!"
She looked at me with a horrified face and almost dropped her scissors.
"Just kidding," I said as a smiled sweetly, returning from a monster to a princess.

he he he...

----

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Nina wrote the following poem, and came to me with a last-line dilemma. I filled it in, so here you go, Nina!

The rest of you have to figure out the riddle.

---------------------
"Who am I?" by Nina Thampy

I am a sweet,
I am a treat.

Unrobe my foil,
Smooth and shiny,
The inside is royal,
And brown like my heiny.
-----------------------
Any guesses?

In other news, my mom just learned how to turn on the computer. Hooray!
It's complicated...

For a good many reasons, I'm staying away from boys this summer.
And then Mitchell winked and said, "What about men?"

It's complicated, and in more ways than one. I need time.
The uncertainty of the next year is settling in, making me nervous.
---
My parents and Nina got back from San Francisco today, and I cleaned the house, mowed the lawn, and got everything spic-n-span for their arrival. Do the men in the house do anything? ...oh wait, they're still boys.

Luke just got his learner's permit for driving and was begging me to drive with him to the library. Fair enough, I said, and we took off in my mocha Lincoln. The air conditioner doesn't work, the engine makes noises, the leather is sticky, and the radio dies from time to time: which makes it a great student car. Not to mention, its length is enormous, making it large and in charge of the road. This is one of those cars that make you squirm and inch over in your lane when it passes you on the highway.
It wasn't until we were on our way home did he tell me that it was his first time driving on the main road! Ahhh! I scrawled "STUDENT DRIVER" on the back of a long receipt and made Nina keep it on the back windshield... it's better than nothing!
I remember when Matthew started driving... he got the middle finger and several honks on his first drive out. Not to mention, he still gets dirty looks (he's a horrible driver).
As we passed the highway, cars graciously left us to the right lane (the sign worked!). One car sped up alongside us, rolled down the windows, and the girl inside shrieked, "WOOOOO! I JUST GOT MY LICENSE TODAY, HAHA!" and sped off.

Luke has more common sense than most, and he did well today. We just need to work on his appearance, next. Who wears flannel pants to the library, church, and work?!

I am not black, yet...

On facebook, I get several 'friend requests' a week from black guys who "wanna hit that."

The last message read: "I see you from your outfit that you do karate. I like to box myself. Maybe one day we can tango?"

*delete*

---

I've spent the last two days at work, straightening out classes for school, and getting student organizations (ISF, CSA, Karate) ready for the next semester.

I just recently got my MCAT scores back, and have decided to take it again. I know I can do better, and a few points will make a difference when applying to medical schools. The summer is looking grim at the moment, not because of studying and work, but because of the uncertainty that lies ahead.
On top of studying and work, I plan on shadowing a few doctors, including an eye doctor and a surgeon (just to get a look into other professions in the medical field).

Work is as busy as ever. Funny thing is that every time I come into the clinic (winter, summer break) the office is full of new people. The turnover rate is rather amusing (blame that on incompetance!) and can be refreshing, but it takes a while to get used to the new people.

The 'rents are going to San Francisco for a few days... which means that I will have charge of the boys. They will eat my experimental cooking and LIKE IT! I do plan on following my study schedule, but I'm also hoping to get in a few hard workouts. Rollerblading, biking, lifting, swimming, and anything else. After just getting my Apprentice Black belt in Tang Soo Do, I'm really pumped about staying in shape and keeping it up. Rock climbing, anyone?

So I survived the DeathMarch...

Location: Reis Biological Station
Reason: Spring Flora of the Ozarks

As of yesterday, I am halfway through this plant class. This is what it looked like:

---

Profound question of the week:

Nina: "Dad, what exactly is toothpaste?"

*silence*

Dad: "Have you brushed your teeth today?"
Friday, December 21, 2007

Rudely awakened at 5:30am to go to work. Look outside when you get the chance, quick! The thick, low-lying fog gives the world a soft, eerie glow.

7:30am and I'm on my second cup of coffee and second piece of deer sausage, so it must be time to start work. This winter break is going to be spent between the office and MCAT prep books.

I had the funniest dream earlier this week, but it quickly became the most embarrassing dream as of yet. No need to ask details; just don't dream too hard or it might come true.

Mallika and George came home on Wednesday evening and Mom made a feast, which I indulged in after I got back from having dinner with friends. Ah!

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

Left Bethlehem. Security guards are known to make tourists leave their belongings on the bus and make them walk over to the other side, to make sure the visitors arent hiding anything or taking pictures of them.

Drove into Jerusalem. What a change....! The streets are neat and clean, there are trees and greenery everywhere, and buildings are not broken down. What a comparison to Bethlehem. How unreal. This made me feel sickly.

We followed Jesus' path with the cross, his trial, calvary, Mount of Olives, and my favorite, the Garden of Gethsemani.

Walked around the pedestrian mall in downtown Jerusalem; got pastries for tomorrow's long day trip.

My head hurts a little.
