| studying jeremiah in summer bible study, which is a nice reminder to wake up and start to think of yourself as part of the world around you. why is it so easy to fall asleep in an isolated routine of work, talk and entertainment?
-on saturday, the Lord's Resistance Army in Northern Uganda ( a rebel movement known for its habit of kidnapping children and turning them into soldiers or wives) after a 20-year war is signing a cease fire with the government based in southern Uganda. the LRA is pulling out into designated safe zones in Soutehrn Sudan and Congo, and has promised to release all its women and children captives. the LRA is of course claiming that the government is violating its side of the agreements, so the government is claiming the same about the LRA. The whole system is complicated because some time ago the UN International Criminal Court indicted the five top LRA people for war crimes, so it is uncertain how dedicated they are to giving themselves up. You should read this article, it is strange, horrible, beautiful and very very interesting. http://allafrica.com/stories/200608290017.html If you are a person that prays, please be praying because this is extremely important.
-randomly, today is the anniversary (September 1st 1939) of Germany's invasion of Poland, that started World War Two. about this day, WH Auden wrote in "Sept 1st, 1939"
"I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-Second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade."
soemthing about being at the beginning, middle and end of a war all at once sort of brings history home to me. what will our generation be remembered for?

| UTOPIAAn island on which all becomes clear.
Here you can stand on the solid ground of proof.
Here are no points of interest except the point of arrival.
The bushes fairly groan under the weight of answers.
Here grows the tree of Right Conjecture with branches untangled since all time past.
The dazzlingly simple tree of Comprehension hard by the spring that's named It's Just That Easy.
The deeper into the woods, the wider opens out the Valley of the Obvious.
If doubt exists, it is dispelled by the wind.
Echo unevoked clamors to be heard and eagerly explain the secrets of the worlds.
Off to the right a cave wherein lies Reason.
Off to the left the lake of Deep Conviction. Truth breaks off from the bottom and lightly floats to the surface.
Towering over the valley stands Unshakable Certainty. From its peak emerges the Crux of the Matter.
For all its charm, the island is uninhabited, and the faint footprints seen along the shore point without exception in the direction of the sea.
As if this were a place just for leaving and for immersion in a depth of no return.
In a life that's not for comprehending.

| can any of you hydrologists out there help explain this one? This is rather frightening. I figure I must be missing some vital link, but I don't know what.
1. Woodland is in the Cache Creek plain. Most of its flood control structures are such that they provide protection from flood events that are likely to occur every 10-20 years.
2. Woodland's levees have broken before. FEMA and the US Army Corps of Engineers both have been strongly recommending some additional protection, ie a flood wall, since 2003..
3. In 2004, Woodland voters not only rejected the floodwall idea, but they put a measure on the ballot specifically prohibiting the City from funding or considering any similar measure-- so, the whole process has stagnated.....
4. Until now. The floodplain designations, which put large parts of Woodland in "deep flood areas", meaning that they could be submerged deeper than 4 feet in case of a 1 in a 100 year flood event, have been causing economic stagnation in Woodland. So Woodland is taking action by.... lobbying to get the "deep flood" calculation changed.
I don't enderstand!! The only idea I can think of is that evil geniuses ala the League of Shadows have infiltrated Woodland and are subtly working towards its destruction.
