| From the minds of others, to mine, to yours...Whatup my brothas and sistas.
I am volunteering as a college rep for a
record label called ESL music from DC. I had never heard of them
before, but they found me on MySpace and asked me if I wanted to be a
part of the internet crew. It's not a bad deal because they send
me free stickers, t-shirts, discounts on music, etc. Plus it just
feels cool to be associated with someone in the industry.
Anyway, ESL has signed several bands and the
ones I have listened to are pretty cool. Most of the music falls
in the experimental/electronica/breakbeat realm of music. One
band they are promoting right now is called Thievery Corporation.
They had a track on the Garden State soundtrack that came out a couple
of years ago. They are coming out with a new album called
"Versions" which includes many different versions or remixes of popular
music of diverse genres. For example, there are tracks originaly
performed and composed by Anoushka Shankar (daughter of famous sitarist
Ravi Shankar), The Doors, Nora Jones, and Sarah McLachlan.
If any of you are interested in checking out
Thievery Corporation, they have a MySpace:
<www.myspace.com/thieverycorporation> and and and official
homepage: <www.thieverycorporation.com>. You can also hear
samples of all the tracks at amazon:
P.S. Here is a coupon that I am charged with dispursing around
the internet. Feel free to use it yourself or share it with
others.

| This semester's reading assignment for my American Popular Culture class:
Zane Grey - Riders of the Purple Sage (1912)
Anita Loos - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925)
John Steinbeck - In Dubious Battle (1936)
John Hersey - Hiroshima (1946)
Joseph Heller - Catch-22 (1955)
Nelson George - Hip Hop America (1998)
Should be pretty exciting... and the Prof is pretty intelligent
too. I'm about halfway through the first novel right now.
My priority this semester is to keep up on this reading as I do not
want to get behind (I'm in rehab for procrastination). I'll
probably be in this guy's office hours when it comes time to write the
term paper.
